A film clip and its educational relevance... please comment!

We have seen film clips today:
1. Absolutely Fabulous (Hospital Scene)
2. Gilmore Girls (Rory in Yale)
3. Little Britain (Fat Fighters)
4. Sopranos (Big Girls Don’t Cry, Psychonanalyst Scene)
5. Mumins (The Martian Goes Home)
6. Mc Leod’s Daughters (in the Pub)

Please comment on the discussion we had after viewing the clips:
What educational themes are embedded? Which one can you relate to? Which theme might be a theme you would like to write about in your paper?

Today on 24th oktober 2007 i overslept and so i missed the lesson. Now i see in the blog what i missed. From the list i know only two series and that are
"Gilmore Girls" and "Sopranos".
I think the educational style of Loreley (Gilmore Girls, Rory`s mother) is very interesting because its nearly free from traditional practices. At first i like her character because she is not complicated, she is heartly, direct and funny. The relation to her daughter is good because they can talk about everything and they are honest to each other. What i don`t like is that they switch role of mother and doughter because Loreley is chaotic and unreasonable. The most important thing in any relationship is that everyone can be himself/herself and that freedom is for both given.

Little Britain, fat fighters: another educational theme we didn’t mentioned is how to deal with Diasporas. And including a little bit of gender studies, how to deal with women from Diaspora.

In the beginning I found it difficult to find educational themes in the video clips but it became easier one by one. The thing that impressed me most was what we found out about the szene in "gilmore girls". It's interesting to think about the background. Traditions of the university and the family, money, motivation, failing and succeeding.

For me the most interesting part of the film session was to see how education finds place in daily live and between regular relationships for example: Friendship "Gilmore Girls" or the therapeutic relationship between psychologist and patient "Sopranos".

Education is almost everywhere. I'm scared. Have to watch out before I get paranoid. (naaa just a joke)

It so interesting for me because I have the feeling, that education mostly is associated with Children and Schools.

i found it quite interesting, that there was such a mass of theories.. because the first time i only found the obvious one theme..

i'm not sure yet if one of those fields will be of interest for my paper, let's see what i will still find..

Hi all
For me it is very interesting to see the different types of leaders and to learn about group dynamics. In “Gilmore Girls” the girl named Paris was the leader from the “university-paper-office” – she was very authoritarian and no article was good enough for her – so nobody wanted to work anymore. I think, it is very important that a leader is able to motivate the staff members.
We also saw a leader of a group in “fat fighters”. The leader tried to domineer the other persons and he also unmasked them. It is really interesting to see the reaction from the members of this group.
When you work in or with a group it is always interesting to see how the members work together – i notice that in every course .

For Valentin: you will see – education is a lot more than children and school (but a lot of people think – when you study “Pädagogik” you will only work as a teacher or a kindergarten teacher.) I think it is interesting and important to see which different jobs you can do when you finish your study.

So – i hope you understand my written “English”

@ Michaela

you got me wrong in one point!
I was talking about that in puplic! (as you mentioned too), pedagogic is only! associated the children and school.
It would be sad if me as a Tutor for the Allgemeine Pädagogik would not know that this belive is just a saying and has nothing to do with reality.
Just to get the clearer (is this germanism?)

i found the various locations and situations education took place at/in quite interesting. you can`t reduce it to parents-children-relationships, it reaches deeply into any person's life: our goal should be "LIFELONG LEARNING".
the "gilmore girls"-scence, where rory commanded a couple of students to get the university-newspaper ready under time pressure
impresse, impressed me - education even happens between people of the same age, which shows it is based on experience, not on age.
i myself can relate to the "fat fighters"-education style in some points: idols can show you ways to reach your personal aim, they can motivate you! what i didn't like was the suppression surrounding this special educational situation - "heroes and villains" should stand as a good example for how deal with any situations and shouldn't decrease one's self esteem by showing their dominance.
concerning the question about the theme of my paper i'll join rebecca-let's see what comes =)

@Valentin

I´m very, very sorry, that i missunderstood you in that point - but i really know "Pädagogik"-students who don´t know about that!
Sorry again

hi!

I think the scene in the clip "Sopranos" was very interesting! Valentin mentioned:"the therapeutic relationship between the psychologist and the patient in the "Sopranos"." => But that`s more than a normal therapeutic setting, it`s called supervision!

I found a definition of SUPERVISION:
"Supervision is used in counselling, psychotherapy and other mental health disciplines as well as many other professions engaged in working with people. It consists of the practitioner meeting regularly with another professional, not necessarily more senior, but normally with training in the skills of supervision, to discuss casework and other professional issues in a structured way. This is often known as clinical or counselling supervision or consultation. The purpose is to assist the practitioner to learn from his or her experience and progress in expertise, as well as to ensure good service to the client or patient.(http://en.wikipedia.org/
wiki/Clinical_supervision)"

So I think that could be a good theme for the paper!

Hy everybody!
When I first looked at the list of video clips, I also found it very interesting to see Gilmore Girls on it. I couldn´t come to the last lesson and so I read all your comments and it was very helpful for me to understand the connection between the Gilmore Girls and education.
I think it is one of the most interesting things to see how education works in real and normal life, instead of only reading scientific texts, which is, of course, also very interesting. The second important thing to learn from such series I think is, that you can see, that education and above all the splitting of educator and pupil, has nothing to do with age.
See you tomorrow

hello everybody... i forgot to write in something, but what i wanted to say is, that the last lesson was very interesting for me. at the beginning i had doubts if i'd understand it because in remerbering me of the school, watching english tv was all the time horrible! but... last time it was good and i was quite astonished by understanding it well.
the topic which interests me most is the family and the different roles within the family. maybe not only the roles of the different members of the family but also the roles of men and women in particular situations. this topic was visible especially in the clips "Absolutely Fabulous" "Gilmore Girls" and "Little Britain".
well, that's it from my part.
we'll see tomorrow!

Hi dudes ;)
I am very sorry that I am so late to post my comment, because it wasn't clear if I can join in the seminar until Monday and today I was at home in wonderful Carinthia (and my family hasn't got internet yet *grml* *lol*) Anyway.. I'm allowed to join in *strike* and now I can post my comment concerning the topic of last Wednesday :) at the beginning it was very difficult for me to follow and to understand the plot of the clips because it's a long time ago since I had to do a little bit more with the english language. Even so, the most interesting educational style for me was at "Gilmore girls". I am no fan of this sitcom so far, but I like the behaviour between Lorelai and Rory because they are very open minded and honest and they talk about nearly every problem. I think it is one of the most important things, that you can tell everything to each other. It is a very good base for the relationship between two people. And a further reason of that base is trust and that you can count on a reliable person.

Okay, I think that’s enough for today!
See you!

Hello everybody!

I have to say that at the beginning I found it also very difficult to understand the clips. After a few minutes it became better. I like the educational style of the mother in Gilmore Girls. She is very funny and really open-minded on the one side, and on the other she knows how to lead Rory in the right direction. And I think that the girl called Paris is the complete opposite of Rory's mother. She is very disciplined and has a anger management problem too. Her world falls into pieces if something doesn't work as she wants it to work. The educational Theme in the clip little Britain was also very obvious for me and easy to understand, because I've seen the clip before... The clip Mumins I didn't understand at all. It was very very hard for me to understand the dialect.

i also found the psychological background of "sopranos" quite interesting because it made me think about human subconscious and its importance for every day-acting and behaviour: every so-called "rational" decision is mainly influenced by it...

hei everyone,

I just found out how to make blogs - sometimes I am a bit slowly and lazy - so I will also write my impressions about the video clips.

As Reini already wrote, I also found the various locations and situations where education took place in the clips, quite interesting. It was also suprised about the fact, that I focused on ohter points than my colleques - for instance - I concentraded more on the body language and behavior of the people wherease my somebody else focused on the language(maybe I did that because unfortunately I couldn´t understand everything).

But in the future I will try to watch some english movies and then I hope, that I will understand everything.

see you
